The world of tonight

ABOUT THE FILM

Short feature film The world of tonight is inspired by the diary entries of the dreams of little Susie, the daughter of Alfred and Hermina Stiassni - the owners of Villa Stiassni. Internationally acclaimed artist and director Daria Martinová is the granddaughter of Susi and during the filming she managed to recreate 7 dreams out of 250 that her grandmother dreamt about Brno or the villa. By interpreting the dreams directly in the villa, she managed to bring a part of the complex and rich history back to life. The film was shot on 16mm format and premiered as part of an exhibition of the same name at the prestigious Barbican Centre in London.

ABOUT FILMING LOCATIONS

Villa Stiassni

Villa Stiassni was built between 1927 and 1929 according to the design of the famous Brno architect Ernst Wiesner for the family of the Jewish textile manufacturer Alfred Stiassni. However, he lived here with his wife and daughter for only 9 years, as the whole family had to flee the threatened occupation. For many people, the villa came to be known as a government villa after Edvard Beneš visited it. Later it was used to accommodate famous and important visitors, for example Cuban President Fidel Castro stayed here, as well as most of our presidents. It was officially opened to the public on 13 December 2014.

Stone Hill

Nature Reserve Stone Hill is located in the Nový Lískovec district of Brno and is known especially for its population of large-flowered coneflowers, which is the largest in the world and every spring covers the meadow with many purple flowers. Many other rare species of plants and animals can be found here on 16 hectares. The reserve includes both forest and non-forest parts. Here you can see, for example, rare steppe vegetation or meet the Hungarian swifts. The site is traversed by nature trail and the Kamenný vrch forest park with a lookout tower is also nearby.

INTERESTING FACT FROM THE SHOOTING

Don't worry, in the film the broken textile wall from the music salon of Villa Stiassni was actually a replica (a textile with a photo print) installed in the studio. And the dreams that didn't make it into the film? The one in which the villa is flooded to the roof or the dream about the fire on the terrace of Villa Stiassni. The quicksand scene was actually filmed in the garden of Villa Stiassni. With the consent of the caretakers, the filmmakers had to dig a large pit in a remote corner of the garden and place a special device in it to simulate sand dangerously spilling into an unknown depth. After filming, the garden returned to its original state.
