The casemates at Špilberk

The system of long corridors with a vaulted ceiling was created during the Baroque period, when Špilberk Castle was being transformed into a fortress. They were built in 1742 by Colonel Rochepin as accommodation for soldiers; they were transformed into a famous prison after 1783 under Emperor Joseph II. The vaulted corridors are built into two original moats and many serious criminals from all over the Habsburg Monarchy passed through their bowels.
