Originally the German Municipal Theatre, built in the style of strict and late historicism, it was opened in 1882 and became the first fully electrically lit theatre on the European continent. It has been the stage of the National Theatre Brno since 1919 and named after Jiří Mahen, who served as its dramaturge, since 1965.
